What this site is

Namethistle is an independent website that builds free tools for combining, generating and randomising names. It launched in 2026. We are not a naming agency, a baby name database or a domain reseller. We build tools, we explain how they work, and we keep them free.

Why we started it

Name generators are one of the most common utilities on the web and one of the least carefully built. The typical name combiner splits each name at the halfway character and joins the pieces. That approach treats a name as a string rather than as a sequence of sounds, and it is why so many results are unpronounceable.

We thought a tool that understood syllables would produce noticeably better results, so we built one. The Name Combiner breaks each name into syllables, recombines them six different ways, and scores every candidate against the consonant clusters English actually permits. It turns out the difference is large.

How we decide what to build

We only build a tool when we think we can beat what already exists on functionality rather than presentation. That usually means one of three things: the existing tools do a single naive operation where several are possible, they give no way to tell a good result from a bad one, or they offer no control over the output. If none of those apply, we would rather link to the tool that already does the job well.

We publish our scoring methods in full on the how our tools work page. If a tool assigns a score, you should be able to see why.

Our approach to your data

Every tool on this site runs entirely inside your browser. The names you type are never sent to a server, never logged and never stored. There are no accounts. Closing the tab discards everything. This is a design decision, not a policy promise: the code that does the work is delivered to your device and runs there.

We do use privacy-respecting analytics to understand which tools people use and where they get stuck, and we may display advertising to cover hosting costs. Both are described in detail in our privacy policy.

Corrections and suggestions

If a tool gives you a result that seems wrong, or you think our scoring is mishandling a particular kind of name, we would like to know. Linguistic edge cases are exactly the sort of thing we cannot find on our own. Write to us at [email protected] or through the contact page.

Editorial independence

Advertising on this site is served programmatically. Advertisers have no involvement in what we build, what we write, or how our tools rank their results. If we ever recommend a paid product and earn a commission for it, that will be stated clearly on the page where it appears.
