Dwarf Name Generator
Short, closed, built out of stone. Built from a sound system rather than a word list, so the names never repeat and always belong to this tradition.

The sound system behind these names
The opposite of elven in every respect. Syllables are closed — almost every one ends on a consonant — and the vowels are all short. Heavy clusters like br, gr, thr and kr sit at the front, and doubled consonants are common. Short closed syllables are what make the names sound hammered rather than sung.
How names work in this tradition
Dwarven names are short because they are working names — used across a forge, down a shaft, in conditions where a long name would be lost. Almost every syllable ends on a consonant, which makes each one land.
The clan name matters more than the personal name in most settings. It states which hold you belong to and what your family does, and it does not change when you marry or move.
Epithets are earned rather than given. Ironbound and Oathkept are statements about a life, which is why they sit after the clan name rather than replacing it.
Writing with these names
Use the length to signal age
One-syllable dwarf names read as blunt and old-fashioned; two-syllable ones read as ordinary. If you want a character who feels like the last of something, give them the shortest name in the cast.
Let the clan name do the worldbuilding
Ironfist, Coalbrow and Oathdelver each imply a different trade and a different history. Choosing a clan name is often faster worldbuilding than writing a paragraph, and readers absorb it without noticing.
Do not soften them
The temptation with a harsh name is to add a vowel to make it friendlier. Resist it. The hardness is the characterisation, and a dwarf whose name is easy to say stops reading as a dwarf.

Common questions
Why do dwarf names sound so different from elf names?
The sound systems are structurally opposite. Elven syllables are open and use consonants you can hold. Dwarven syllables are closed, ending on hard consonants, with short vowels and heavy front clusters like br, thr and kr. Open syllables sound sung; closed ones sound hammered.
Do dwarves have surnames?
In this generator they carry clan names, built from two elements the way elven surnames are but from harder material — Ironfist, Stonebeard, Battleaxe. Many settings also use patronymics alongside the clan name, which you can add by hand.
Can I get female dwarf names?
Yes. Set the generator to feminine and it applies the endings that tradition uses — -a, -dis, -hild, -run — while keeping the same closed-syllable structure. The clan name is unchanged, because clan membership is not gendered.
